Getting the file out of QuickBooks POS
QuickBooks POS can still export its lists even though the product is discontinued. You need it running on the machine that holds your company file.
- 1Items: open the Item List, then use File, then Utilities, then Export, and save as a text or Excel file. Include every column you can — this tool keeps what it recognises and passes the rest through.
- 2Customers: open the Customer List and export it the same way. Account balances and discounts are worth including.
- 3Sales history: run a Sales Detail report over the longest period you can, then export that. This is the part other migration tools leave behind.
This tool never connects to QuickBooks. It reads a file you exported, in your browser, and gives you cleaner files back.

How it works

Export from QuickBooks POS
Open the list you want, then File, Utilities, Export. For sales, run a Sales Detail report over the longest period you can and export that.

Clean CSVs you own, whatever you move to next: a plainly named neutral file, and for products a Shopify-shaped starter file as well.
What it does not do
- It reads exports, not the QuickBooks company file itself. Anything you did not export is not here.
- One file at a time. Items, customers and sales are three separate exports.
- It does not import anything into another system for you.
Questions
Does this connect to my QuickBooks company file?
No. There is nothing to install and nothing that touches QuickBooks. You export a file yourself using QuickBooks POS, and this page reads that file in your browser. Your data never leaves the machine.
Why does sales history matter?
Because it is what tells you what to reorder. Shopify’s own migration help page states that order history, purchase orders, discounts and customer order history are not migrated. Once QuickBooks POS is switched off, that record is gone unless you exported it. This tool turns it into units and revenue per product.
What happens to my price levels and multiple stores?
Both are kept. Every Price 1 to Price 5 column becomes its own column in the output, and every Store NN Qty column becomes its own quantity column. When there is no overall quantity column, the store quantities are added up for the total.
Can I import the result straight into Shopify?
The Shopify file is shaped to their long-standing product import columns and gives every item a unique handle, so two products can never be merged into one during the import. Check it against Shopify’s current template before you run it: those columns are theirs to change, and we would rather you verify than trust us with your whole catalogue.
What if my export is not recognised?
You choose the type yourself and it will be read anyway. Recognition looks for the column names QuickBooks POS writes, so a heavily customised report layout can fall outside them. A sales export is only ever treated as sales when it also carries a receipt number, a date or a line total, so a product list can never be misread as one.
